Inside the Box

Alpha Model's classic dark blue box — everything you need for the standard, F1 safety car, or P-one edition.

To make this a proper project I had to unbox the latest Alpha Model creation. In the classic dark blue box there is everything you need to make a normal, F1 safety car or the P-one edition model.

The cast are also this time nice. There are a few leftovers on the rims but all in all usual Alpha Model mold quality. And to start reviewing the kit I will show you the small pieces. All of them have really nice details and are divided into sections that will make detailing a bit easier. The kit comes with the standard sport seat and the optional bucket seats, and for the first time on an Alpha Model kit there was one broken part in the kit and that was one of the seat upholsteries. Nothing serious as it was a clean break that could easily be glued back together.

The biggest resin piece is the body. And that comes in one piece with all the side skirts and diffusor moulded on it. This can be a bit stressful but with the included carbon fibre decals and a panel line that has to be scribed everything will look amazing. Also for the first time in an 1/24 Alpha Model there are 3D printed parts included, and the prints are amazing and left on their supports in order to make sure the rear wing keep their form. Like mentioned before the wheels have some small burrs but with a bit of sanding they will be looking great, as for the size they are different front and rear and look to me as the right dimensions. In the PE parts all the important details are included.

The last thing are the decals. And as mentioned in the beginning there are decals for a few versions of the final car included, also included are all carbon fibre decals.

Important: As you can see on the last picture there is a small fit problem with the underbody — so when making your model be sure to correct this before painting the body.

So what do you think — did Alpha Model make a great model again or not? I think they managed it again.

Preparing the Body Shell

The next chapter begins — all about the beautifully casted body shell of the Mercedes.

To start preparing the body for its colour, first all the panel gaps were deepened with a special scribing knife.

Next step is to sand the entire body with a 800 grit sanding sponge provided by Spekter Žalec · Specialist za barve Št. 1.

And here now comes the final trick — recently I have got an ultrasonic cleaner, so instead of hand washing the body with warm water and dishwashing soap, I have put the engraved and sanded body directly into the cleaner, poured some dishwashing soap in it and let it work its magic for about 15 minutes.

The result is a flawless silicon-free body that will be painted in the next step.

Tip: Using an ultrasonic cleaner with dish soap for about 15 minutes is a game-changer — it removes all residual release agent and leaves the body perfectly clean and silicon-free for painting.

Painting the Interior

Since the original car has an almost completely black interior, a combination of Satin Black and Matt Black paints was used.

Now I will show you how I painted the interior parts of the AMG GT Black. Since the original car has an almost completely black interior I have used a combination of Satin Black and Matt Black paints. And for the first time I have used the new AMMO by Mig Jimenez ATOM paints supplied by Back To Basics — and I have to say that I'm impressed.

After all the interior parts got painted and dried it is time to add some details and to assemble it into an attractive unit.

First detail that I wanted to add was realistic carpeting, and therefore I added some PVA glue to the tub and then added some black flocking powder.

Next on were the seats. To the black base I added the Petronas stripes and a small AMG logo.

After this I added all of the decals to the dashboard, and to make sure all the decals fit great to the shape I used some Decal Fix from AMMO by Mig Jimenez provided by Back To Basics.

Last touch was to add the fabric seat belts and to put the seats and the middle console into the tub.

The first major piece of the AMG is finished. Although it first seemed that the interior will lack in details due to it mostly being black, it actually came out pretty nice. The Petronas coloured stripes make it stand out a bit, and the combination of flat carbon and piano black trim pieces finished off with some chrome details ensures a detail-full finish — and it also gives you a hint of what the exterior colour will be.

As for the fit, apart from the seats being a bit bent until glued together, Alpha Model made a good job.

Note: The dash and the door cards are attached only for photo purposes and have to be assembled in the car body at the final assembly stage.

Wheels and Brakes

The last step in fabrication before assembly — painting and detailing the wheels, discs and calipers.

The last step in fabrication before the final assembly are the wheels.

To start all off, the rims and calipers were painted with AMMO by Mig Jimenez Alclad Black gloss base supplied by Back To Basics. The rest of the parts was painted with AMMO by Mig Jimenez ATOM Matt Black paint, all using the Gaahleri Airbrush GHAD-39 airbrush.

To add some realism to the discs they were then sanded using a rotary tool. After this the hubs, calipers and discs got assembled.

For some extra detail, 0.6 mm holes were drilled into the rims and custom 3D printed air valves were added.

Detail tip: Drilling 0.6 mm holes and fitting custom 3D-printed air valves is a small touch that makes a huge difference in realism on the finished wheels.

Painting the P-One Scheme

With the body prepared, both paints mixed and the new Gaahleri Airbrush Swallowtail ready, the body was painted in the special P-one paint scheme.

For the base the Mercedes-Benz "Hightech Silber" scaled-down paint from Number Five was used. After it was completely dried I have carefully painted the rear of the car with "Obsidianschwarz" black paint also scaled down and prepared by Number Five. To give the model a more realistic look I have painted a bit of the rear section with black as on the real car.

To protect the paint and the gradient a thin layer of clear coat was put on the body and left to dry completely.

Applying Decals

Here is the next stage in the body chapter — applying decals. To prepare the clear coated body for decal application, the whole body got sanded with 2000 grit sanding sponges provided by Spekter Žalec · Specialist za barve Št. 1. After the body is completely flat, the supplied carbon fibre and the special stars decals were applied. To make the decal adhere and comply better with the surface I used the Decal Fix and Decal Set solutions from AMMO by Mig Jimenez that were supplied by Back To Basics.

After all the decals were applied and have dried, the body got a nice gloss clear coat to protect the decals.

Polishing and Detailing

Here is the last step for the body before the final assembly and that is detailing it. To start the process I first sanded the critical areas of the body with 3M Trizact sanding sponges in grits from 3000 to 8000. After all the spots were sanded, then the machine polishing began. This time I opted for a 2-step machine polishing. For the first step I used a hard polishing pad in combination with Number Five Medium polishing compound, and for the second step I used a medium pad and the 3M Finesse-it Purple polishing compound that was provided by Spekter Žalec · Specialist za barve Št. 1.

After polishing there were a few details that needed to be flat black, and for them I have used the Air Viper 0.2 mm airbrush together with AMMO by Mig Jimenez flat black paint, both were supplied by Back To Basics. With the paint dried and cleaned — the body is ready for final assembly.

Final Assembly

After vacation it is time to finish the AMG — the final assembly steps that bring the model to life.

To start the process, the front grille and emblem were attached to the body.

After that, headlamps, door handles and custom metal exhaust tips were installed.

Next was the assembly of wheels and tail lights, and to close the body the windows were fitted.

Last steps were attaching the huge rear wing and side mirrors. To prepare the model for the final photoshoot it got cleaned.
