How to Create Realistic Exhaust Pipe and Tailpipe Effects

Alpha Model Tech Share Series · 2026 · 1/24 Scale
The exhaust pipe is one of the most intuitive details that reflects the completion quality of a model car. A refined tailpipe effect can completely transform the presence of the entire vehicle. Here is the full workflow plus a look at Hobby Design aftermarket exhaust pipes.

01 · Hobby Design Exhaust Products Introduction

Hobby Design (also written as "HD") is a well-known brand for high-detail exhaust pipes. Their product lineup covers a wide range of supercar and racing model applications.

Product Model Description Diameter
HD07-0081 1/24 Exhaust pipe (100mm) 100mm
HD07-0086 1/24 Exhaust pipe (86mm) 86mm
HD07-0088 1/24 Exhaust pipe (110mm) A 110mm
HD07-0090 1/24 Exhaust pipe (110mm) C 110mm
HD07-0075 1/24 BMW Z4 GT3 Stainless Steel Exhaust Set Vehicle-specific
HD03-0613 1/24 Mclaren Senna Detail-up Exhaust Vehicle-specific

These pre-formed resin exhaust pipes directly replace the flat or detail-poor parts in the original kit, adding significant realism to supercar and racing models.

02 · Basic Exhaust Pipe Treatment Process

Step 1 — Surface Cleaning and Pretreatment

  1. Thoroughly clean oil and release agent from the surface with degreasing alcohol (or Tamiya Lacquer Thinner).
  2. Gently sand with 2000-grit sandpaper to increase adhesion of the subsequent coats.
  3. For stainless steel surfaces, spray a layer of Etch Primer first for better paint adhesion.

Step 2 — Tailpipe Opening Shape Shaping

Real car exhaust outlets usually have these forms, each needing a different technique:

  • Rolled Edge (most common): use fine sandpaper to carefully shape a slight rolled edge effect.
  • Recessed: use a round-tip tool to gently press and create a recessed indentation.
  • Tapered: the transition from thick to thin; use etching sheet to carefully taper the opening.

Step 3 — Internal High-Temperature Discoloration

Real exhaust pipes show golden-yellow to dark-brown heat discoloration inside due to sustained high temperatures. Simulate it like this:

  1. Base layer: spray Tamiya X-26 Clear Orange, applying more layers near the tailpipe opening.
  2. Gradient: mix Tamiya X-7 Red and X-26 Clear Orange for a transition from inside to outside.
  3. Metal texture: dilute black enamel paint with Xylol or Tamiya Extra Thin, pour into the pipe interior, wipe the surface — grooves retain black and present a metal texture.

03 · Soot Staining Effect

Due to combustion products, the tailpipe opening develops characteristic black soot. Here is the professional treatment:

Method 1 — Dry Brushing

  1. Select a black oil-based pigment (Windsor & Newton Raw Umber or Ivory Black).
  2. Add a little titanium white to reduce purity and make the effect more natural.
  3. Adjust the paint on your palette to a semi-dry state — press the brush on paper until the lines begin to become uneven.
  4. Brush from the inner edge of the tailpipe opening outward, heavy-to-light gradient.
  5. Layer and build up; do not apply everything at once — wait until each layer is dry before the next.

Method 2 — Enamel Wash

  1. Dilute black enamel paint with Xylol at a 3–4x ratio.
  2. Spray a thin layer on the inner tailpipe wall with a fine airbrush (0.2–0.3mm).
  3. Enamel paint dries slowly and shows slight leveling, forming a natural smoky texture.

04 · Rust and Aging Effects (Vintage/Rally Models)

  1. Use a fine brush to apply Ammo by Mig rust texture paste or rust powder at the tailpipe edge.
  2. Gently blend with a cotton swab, slightly heavier at the edges for a natural rust transition.
  3. Seal the rust powder with Mod Podge or diluted PVA glue to prevent it from falling off.
  4. Finally, spray a matte clear topcoat (Testors Dullcote or Mr. Hobby Super Clear Flat).

05 · Exhaust Smoke Effect (Freshly Switched-Off Look)

  1. Use an airbrush at low pressure (8–10 PSI) to spray Tamiya X-19 Smoke.
  2. Use pulse spraying — quick light presses to let the smoke present an irregular drifting feel.
  3. Alternatively use Molotow transparent ink, apply it around the tailpipe opening with an old brush, and blend with a clean brush.

Note: Smoke effects do not need to be heavy — a light residue is actually more realistic.

06 · "Hot State" Exhaust Pipe Visual Effect

To simulate an exhaust pipe that just finished a hot run, give the inner tailpipe a faint blue-purple heat halo:

  1. Mask the outer ring of the inner tailpipe, exposing only the center.
  2. Spray a very light layer of Tamiya X-24 Clear Yellow.
  3. Overlay a very light layer of Tamiya X-3 Clear Blue.
  4. The two overlapping colors create a natural blue-purple heat halo.

07 · Installation Tips and Precautions

  • Hobby Design exhaust pipes use butt-joint connection — dry-fit first to confirm angle and position before gluing.
  • Use two-hour epoxy resin for bonding; after curing it leaves no traces and has high strength.
  • When installing exhaust hooks or mounting clamps, drill pilot holes on the parts first, then secure with screws.
  • Do not forcibly bend stainless steel when adjusting position — it will create permanent creases that cannot be repaired.
  • Leave a 0.5–1mm gap between the exhaust and the body chassis to prevent scraping during display.
