A Porsche 911 DLS Singer Build — Chapter 1: The Car in Story

There's a fast and handsome air-cooled Porsche 911 called the Singer. The car that you are about to build in 1/24 scale is a tribute to one of the most extraordinary restomod projects ever attempted — a reimagining of the 911 that finally delivers on every performance promise the air-cooled original always hinted at.

The Lineage — Porsche, the 911, the Air-Cooled, the Singer

There's a sports car called the Porsche. There's a rear-engine, rear-drive sports car called the 911. There's a classic 911 called the Air-Cooled. And there's an air-cooled 911 called the Singer.

That last one — the Singer — is the subject of this build.

The Story Behind the Singer

Singer Vehicle Design, an American company, has formed an indissoluble bond with the classic air-cooled Porsche 911. Singer's 911 is not only more powerful than the original Porsche 911, but it also has a more elegant interior — like a walking work of art.

Singer's main builds are based on the 1960s and early '70s Porsche 911 — they keep the original classic elements as far as possible, while using the latest technology to optimise chassis control. The style is very faithful to the original, but there are exceptions — for example, the wide-body 964. Not only do they use advanced materials like titanium alloy and carbon fibre for weight reduction (bringing the vehicle weight down to only 990 kg), but they also brought in Williams Advanced Engineering, the technology-development company of the F1 team Williams Racing, to optimise the aerodynamics.

The front anti-collision beam, front lower-lip air intake, rear-view mirror, and tail wing were all optimised to reduce wind resistance and improve aerodynamic efficiency.

The Engine — A 4.0-Litre Air-Cooled Monster

In terms of power, the 4.0-litre naturally-aspirated horizontally-opposed six-cylinder air-cooled engine produces 500 horsepower and revs past 9,000 RPM. In the air-cooled Porsche world, where most engines are happy to live around 7,000 RPM, this is a serious piece of engineering.

A Limited Masterpiece

Singer will supply only 75 DLS remodelled machines, all of which are made at the company's UK facility.

DLS is short for Dynamics and Lightweighting Study. It was developed in collaboration with technology partners such as Williams Advanced Engineering, Bosch, Michelin, Brembo, and Hewland — a dream team of motorsport engineering.

A Ferrari F1 SF23 Build — Chapter 1: Background

Before we touch a single resin part, let's meet the car and the project that inspired this build — a 1/20 scale full-detail kit of the Ferrari SF-23, reference AM03-0011, produced by Alpha Model, and the story behind PJ's piece — "Vamos!!"

The Car Behind the Build

The SF-23 was built by Scuderia Ferrari for the 2023 F1 World Championship. It was driven by Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz, where they collected 406 championship points and finished 3rd in the Constructors' Championship. It was the only non-Red Bull car that could secure a win during the 2023 season.

Technical Specifications

The Inspiration — "Vamos!!"

The idea for this assembly rooted in my love for Spa-Francorchamps, and the wonderful time Carlos gave us during his time at Ferrari. It is in his honour that I called this piece Vamos!!

To say it in the wonderful language of the Scuderia: Questo non è un addio ma solo un arrivederci!! ("This is not a goodbye but only a see you later.")

To say it in Carlos Sainz's words: Smooooooth operator!

A Ferrari F1 SF23 Build — Chapter 1: Parts Check & Box Opening

Before we touch a single resin part, let's open this kit and see what Alpha Model has packed inside. The SF23 is one of the most ambitious F1 kits ever produced by Alpha Model, and it shows the moment you open the box.

STEP 1: PARTS CHECK

One of my favourite parts of receiving the beautiful Alpha Model kits is unboxing them, and every time I do, I'm blown away by the quality of the parts and all the extras packed into the box. This beautiful model has decals like crazy — 4 big sheets of carbon fibre and 2 logo and extras sheets.

Along with that comes the incredibly moulded resin parts, the beautiful sheets of photo-etch, and with this one comes some really elegantly made 3D-printed parts — printed in a fine resin that takes primer and paint beautifully.

The Car — Italian GP with Charles Leclerc #16

The decals have the option to do the Italian GP car, which had the awesome yellow highlights — and that is almost certainly what I will be doing. You can also choose between Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz, and although I'd love to do the Sainz car to celebrate his time at Ferrari, I am a massive Charles fan — so I will be doing the number 16 car in its yellow-accented Italian livery.

• Check all parts are present and accounted for.
• Look carefully at the detail and remove all the drool that follows.
